“Woman” by Georgie Desuys

Georgie Desuys is a young poet from the UK. You can read more of her work here. This piece is about what it means to be a woman.

I am a woman.
Does that mean
I am second to none
Or far too difficult to handle?
I am a woman,
Not an object of sexual desire;
I have just as much anger,
Left here to harbour.
I am a woman
With a man to escort and
Tend to my every need;
Will I be shamed for not saying please?
I am a woman
With the thoughts of man
Hanging over my head.
One wrong move and
Well, I’ll be dead.
